Ballet Classes

Cecchetti Classical Ballet

Ballet is the foundation for all dance. At the Jack Hunt Dance & Theatre School we teach the Cecchetti Method of Classical Ballet. The Cecchetti method is a superb system of training which is suitable for all, including very young children, students who dance purely for enjoyment and those students who wish to pursue a career in dance. Cecchetti Classical Ballet is a faculty of the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance); an internationally recognised examinations board.

Please see below for more information concerning the different ballet classes we offer.

Beginners Ballet (3-4 year olds)

This class aims to enhance children’s natural love of music and movement and teach them some basic ballet steps in a fun and exciting way. We include lots of stories, imagery and nursery rhymes and the emphasis is on joining in and having fun.

Preliminary Ballet (4-5 year olds)

In this class we introduce a few more ballet steps and a little more structure while still retaining the stories and imagery from the Beginners Ballet. Young children learn best through play and we always bear this in mind with our younger ballet classes.

Primary Ballet & Standards 1 – 8 (5 years +)

These classes are designed for children attending 1 ballet lesson per week. We focus on all aspects of ballet including technique, musicality, improvisation and performance. The students are able to take examinations in small groups, accompanied by their teacher.

Grades 1 – 6 (7 years +)

The syllabi for Grade examinations is larger than the Standards and students enter exams in groups of 2 or 3 without an accompanying teacher. For these reasons it is normally necessary for students taking Grade exams to attend 2 ballet classes per week.

Major Vocational Exams

After the grade examinations, students progress to the vocational exams. These are aimed at students considering a career in dance, whether performing or teaching.

Preparation for Pointe Work

This class is aimed at students who wish to start pointe work. This class will comprise of exercises and preparation to prepare the feet and body for pointe shoes. If you wish to get pointe shoes at some stage then this class is necessary for you. (Students usually would not go on to pointe until the age of 12 at the earliest. However, if at 12 years old you are not considered strong enough in the legs and feet for pointe shoes you will need to wait until your body is ready). Guidance will be given by your teacher. Students who are working Grade 3 upwards and attending 2 ballet classes per week may attend this class.

Pointe Class

This class is for any students who have pointe shoes and wish to continue their pointe work training. This class is particularly important for any students working in the Grades from Grade 5 upwards who wish to consider any form of dance career later on. Any students that just enjoy pointe work that have pointe shoes are also welcome.
